2012 LONDON OLYMPIC - TRAVEL NEWS

August 25, 2010

Traffic remains the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) biggest fear when London hosts the 2012 Games, they have admitted.

Gilbert Felli, the IOC's Executive Director for the Olympic Games, conceded that still have concerns that traffic will affect the organisation of the event, which is due to begin on July 27 and last for 17 days.

London’s roads are notoriously congested with slow moving motor vehicles, particularly during rush hours, and it is predicted that when the 2012 Games come to the capital in under two years time, there will be a significant increase in heavy traffic in the city.

Felli told insidethegames: "I don’t think it [traffic] is the biggest issue concerning London 2012 - I know it is.

The 60 mile (100Km) Olympic Route Network (ORN), linking accommodation centres and venues will be reserved for the exclusive use of Olympic delegates, administrators, journalists and Sponsor’s Guests. It is highly likely, however, that London’s unique traffic management problems will cause problems for all users of the road network, including all those who will not be eligible for ORN privileges.

Non-Olympic members, (ie foreign government and other VVIP guests), will not be given access to the ORN network, meaning that they will have to manage their movements during the Olympic Games along with all of the rest of the population.

Given the pressure on private hire vehicles, and particularly executive cars and drivers, the time to start planning for traffic movements is now….!!
